Fine quality piece of swedish folk art, although we have dated this piece from the time it was painted, it is much older, given the evidence of previously fitted strap work.
Dome top coffer, which has been more rarely made in oak, which possibly indicates that this was made in the southern region of sweden where oaks were more plentiful.
Main colour is a faded blue, with hand painted florals arranged around initials on one side and the date on the other. These types of pieces were often given as marriage gifts. Metal strap work to corners, front and lid. Original working lock and key. Interior of an open candle box and plain storage area.
Later replaced bottom boards. Obvious fading to paintwork. Expected minor age shrinkage between joins but structurally sound. Small evidence of dead/inactive treated worm. Lid when closed has a slight angle, due to historical hinge adjustments, but closes and locks as it should do.
Stunning example.
